Design Inspired by the Grandest Golf Courses in the World
The original course at La Hacienda Links Golf Resort was inspired by legendary layouts like the Old Course at St. Andrews, Augusta National and Pebble Beach, with a design that combines classic and modern elements. Kurtis Bowman, the architect responsible for the renovation, cited St. Andrews as one of his greatest influences. This course favours the traditional “pitch-and-run” style – one which generations of golfers have fallen in love with.
One of the most notable features of the Old Course at St. Andrews is the double green at holes five and 13, with a detailed connection between tradition and contemporary design. Furthermore, the greens – without being excessively fast – maintain a perfect balance for playability.
The Wind: “Our Invisible Player”
The wind plays a fundamental role in the design of La Hacienda. According to Robert Trent Jones Jnr., its presence is an essential characteristic of any course. Depending on the direction, the wind radically changes the dynamics of the game, sometimes creating two completely different challenges on the same hole.
The Levante wind is on the sea, while the Poniente comes from the land. The north and south winds generally don’t blow enough to come into play, which further highlights the uniqueness of the other winds.
The influence of the wind is also reflected in the design of the tee boxes. Instead of traditional rectangular tees, La Hacienda offers more freedom with “ribbon-like” tees and more distance options than usual. This way, you can alter the way you play the course according to the wind direction, strategically lengthening or shortening holes.
Inspiration from Augusta National: Wide Open Spaces and Strong Greens
Kurtis Bowman, the architect of the course, explained that his time at Augusta National defined the way he decided to design his layouts. In his words: “The way Augusta plays, with wide spaces off the tee that allow golfers to place their ball and have a chance to get close to the green, as well as the strength of the greens, are the two elements that define all my projects.” This philosophy is clear at La Hacienda: the Links course is spacious, and the greens have an impeccable quality – just ask any golfer who has played there.
The influence of Pebble Beach: The Sea as a Backdrop
The influence of Pebble Beach on the design of this course is more simplistic than Augusta, but no less important. When Kurtis Bowman first saw Alcaidesa Links, he declared: “It’s the Pebble Beach of Spain.” Although the characteristics of both courses are different, they share wonderful sea views, with – in this case – the unmistakable profile of the Rock of Gibraltar dominating the horizon. Both courses have the similar vistas, and La Hacienda even offers opportunities to see as far as Morocco in the background.
The fifth is perhaps the course’s signature hole. A glorious descent from an elevated tee culminates in a double green just on the edge of the Mediterranean, with the Rock of Gibraltar in the background. This is, of course, one of the most photographed spots on the course and it is iconic for the resort.
